Bunya to the Bay Educational Project

Summary

Australian Heritage Specialists Principal Consultant Benjamin Gall was a guest speaker at the closing ceremony of this year’s award-winning Bunya to the Bay Eco Adventure at Brisbane’s Newstead House on Friday, August 10.

AHS are proud to be a Corporate Sponsor of the biennial program which sees students in Years 11 and 12 take part in a three week, 346 kilometre journey along the Brisbane River, from the Bunya forests of South Burnett to the waters of Moreton Bay, using canoes and bicycles.

During the journey, students learn culture from Elders of the Wakka Wakka, Jinibara, Jagera and Quandamooka Countries as they travel through the traditional lands.

Along the way, students engage in activities such as water monitoring, vegetation assessment, riparian studies, photography and land management studies.

Mr Gall said the program was the first of its kind in the world and allowed students to gain an understanding of the Indigenous heritage of the environment through which they travelled.

“We’re proud to be supporting this valuable and unique program which brings together a number of important elements, including the participation of Elders, recognition of culture and country and environmental education, in a way that’s never been done before,” Mr Gall said.

“This year Bunya to the Bay was refocused to give students an opportunity to explore Country with Traditional Owners, adding a dynamic, living heritage layer to their educative experience.”

Spearheaded by the Stanley River Environmental Education Centre, the program is facilitated in partnership with Barambah and Moreton Bay Environmental Education Centres.
