The Big Pineapple recrowned…and other BIG things!

We were proud to assist in preserving the rich (and sweet) history of one of Queensland’s original ‘Big Things’ – the Big Pineapple at Woombye!

The AHS team has been involved in the renewal of The Big Pineapple since 2019, ensuring the site is restored to its former glory as part of a new Master Plan for the iconic landmark.

Since 1971, The Big Pineapple has been offering a juicy day out for road-tripping families, drawing huge crowds year-round. At the height of its popularity in the 1980s, the tourist attraction welcomed one million visitors each year!

The Big Pineapple celebrates the region’s rich pineapple farming history, and Queensland’s broader tropical fruit industry, but it’s not the only giant monument dedicated to the agricultural success of an area.

So, when did Australia’s love of ‘big things’ start?

After WW2 the number of Australian families that owned a car skyrocketed, as they took to the highways in search of marvel and wonder. Road trips became all the rage between 1950 and 1960, and as cars became safer and more reliable families could go further.

The agri-tourism trend, as it would become known, swept across the country. Giant cows, bananas and, of course, pineapples popped up in regional towns, becoming tourist attractions for road-tripping families to visit and pose with for a photo.

Let’s take a look at some of Australia’s most famous ‘big things’…

The Big Merino, Goulburn, c. 1985

The Big Cow, Nambour, c. 1972

The Big Lobster (Larry), Kingston, c. 1979

The Big Banana, Coffs Harbour, c. 1964

The Big Pineapple is open once more, from 9am-4pm every day of the week, with attractions like the Tree Top Challenge adventure course, train ride and zoo. While visitors aren’t able to climb inside the pineapple just yet, the structure is being restored as part of the Master Plan.

The Master Plan will see The Big Pineapple back to its former glory
