Future looks bright for renewable energy projects

Community funding is driving an increase in renewable energy projects across Australia and the trend is set to continue in 2019, with Australian Heritage Specialists at the forefront of programs including wind and solar farm developments.

Statistics show 2017 was the most productive year to-date for the renewable energy industry and 2018 is tipped to set new records, with the popularity of community funded projects yet to diminish.

As the industry builds to meet Australia’s 2020 renewable energies target, increased investment is forecast for the future.

In Queensland, Gladstone is proving to be a hot spot for solar and wind farm projects, with Kingaroy, Emerald, the Darling Downs and Central Queensland following closely behind.

However, ensuring the viability of projects often hinges on Aboriginal, historic cultural heritage and native title matters within the site boundaries. This is where the experienced team at AHS can assist.

Led by Managing Director Benjamin Gall and Principal Consultant Ann Wallin, AHS are industry leaders in conducting cultural heritage assessments throughout Australia, including feasibility studies, surveys and agreements.

Under Federal, State and local legislative requirements, renewable energy proponents must conduct an assessment of their project area before commencing to ascertain the best way their project can meet its cultural heritage duty of care under the Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Act 2003. This assessment will also determine whether any historic heritage or native title matters require attention.

Around 40 per cent of Australia’s land mass is formally recognized as being subject to the rights and interests of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, according to the Australian Government’s Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet.

Close relationships with Traditional Owners and a deep knowledge of the issues surrounding cultural heritage and Native title matters uniquely positions AHS as leaders in their field, and provides efficient and effective outcomes for renewable energy project proponents.

AHS also has extensive experience in power generation and infrastructure projects and can offer advice on early design feasibility.
