Coral Sea tackles Moreton Bay Classic wooden boat race
Our seagoing Directors, Benjamin and Linda Gall, tackled the Moreton Bay Classic wooden boat race once again in their very own Coral Sea vessel – making their way onto the podium for the second year running!
The Moreton Bay Classic is a 10.9 nautical mile drag race held in southeast Queensland, open to boats of all shapes and sizes – provided they are classic wooden vessels.
As more than 100 classic boats filled the Bay in what was one of the largest displays of heritage boats you’ll find in Australia, the skippers shared stories, a healthy dose of race day rivalry, and at the end of the day – a cold beer!
Weather is historically good for the Moreton Bay Classic, this year being no exception with stunning blue skies as far as the eye could see.
The race starts from Green Island, just off the coast from Manly in Quandamooka Country, heading down to South West Rocks at Peel Island, and back, across the day.
Although it’s called a ‘race’ the event is more about participation and is in no way a navigation event or log race. It’s best described as a post-to-post jaunt, with handicaps imposed last year according to an entrant boat’s waterline length, horsepower and beam (width).
Our Coral Sea is only 42 feet in length, but it continues to show the larger boats a thing or two, being well built and slipping through the water exceptionally well for an old boat – landing us a third-place finish this year!
“It is one of my favourite events, and the Moreton Bay Classic is now regarded as one of Australia’s most prestigious events for classic timber boats. We are very proud to be the inaugural winner for such an event” said AHS Director, Benjamin Gall.
“It’s also a great chance to meet new people and see other classic boats. We will certainly be back next year!”
At AHS, we live and breathe all things heritage from boats, to cars, even our homes! The Coral Sea allows us to embrace heritage through lived experiences, as we continue to tackle events like the Moreton Bay Classic.
